This wonderfully detailed painting by Cecil Doughty depicts the Earl of Bute, who was prime minister between 1762 and 1763, being chastised by members of the public. Publicly reviled in London streets and heavily criticized in the Houses of Parliament, the Earl of Bute hastened to resign the premiership out of fear for his safety over his unpopularity.
